The Story of the Falling People

The Plug-Hole

Originally uploaded by ~~Tone~~

Once there was a group of people called “The Falling People.” The Falling People lived their lives while falling. They went to work falling, mowed their lawns falling, and slept falling. All of their possessions, their computers, houses, pets and cups of coffee hurtled through space falling beside them -at the same rate. This is how it had always been.

The Falling People measured things by feet and inches, up and down. They would say things like, “Five feet up I ate bad shrimp,” or “Several feet down I will be happy.” One day it became very obvious to many of the Falling People that there was something happening that was hard for them to explain. The “something” was moving sideways, or floating, or…they were not sure what, but it was happening, it was affecting them, and it was not falling – according to their standard of measurement.

Some of the Falling People got tired of all the talk about the floating, sideways “something” and would say, “If it does not move up or down, we cannot apply feet and inches to tell what it is and anyway we will get to where we are going by continuing to fall as we are.” Some of the Falling People (whom others called the fanatically down-forward) would get overly excited and say, “Our standard of measurement is up-fashioned by 10 billion feet plus and besides we want more of the something and are not sure how to get it.”

Finally, realizing that it was time to take action, the leader of the Falling People called a gathering and spoke the following…

“Our system of feet and inches, up and down, has served the Falling People very well. Our measurement system is an agreement that was made long ago that enables us to communicate with one another about movement within our special culture. Always there has been the “something” that everyone is discussing, but we did not have the time or the interest, until now, to identify or measure it.

Identifying “it” requires that we first come to an agreement about what “it” is -just as we named our falling motion two million feet back. For now we will name it fulfillment. Fulfillment does not constantly fall beside us as all our material or physical possessions do – it jumps around, sometimes landing, sometimes not, and varies in intensity or degree. We do know we are happier and more productive when fulfillment lands and when it is more intense.

Let us fall forward then communicating about fulfillment by measuring it in degrees with 100 degrees being the highest level of experience.”

All of the Falling People agreed that this would be an interesting experiment to see if not only they could measure fulfillment, but if they could also have fulfillment land more frequently and intensely as they fell down through their lives.

It came about that the Falling People began to realize that fulfillment did not jump around landing sometimes and sometimes not – it was always present falling beside them, but indeed in varying degrees of experience depending on the actions they took. They began to see how they could make adjustments to increase the degrees and could be heard saying things like, “Down there, I am planning on taking a walk so I can increase my fulfillment degree,” or “Up there, I noticed that my fulfillment degree is always much higher when I keep my promises.” It was clear to the Falling People that the experiment to measure fulfillment was a good and useful experiment.

Therefore, it was inevitable that as the attention of the Falling People began to shift more and more onto measuring fulfillment someone spoke up and said, “Hey, are we really falling or is how we measure our motion having us experience falling?”

Five Keys to Measuring Productivity

I wrote an article about this topic several (and I do mean several) years ago published in the Houston Business Journal.  Here are the original Five Keys:

  1. Keep it Balanced – Incorporate both leading measures that drive performance and lagging measures that are outcome, or results-oriented.
  2. Know the Organization – Align productivity objectives with the mission and strategy of the organization.
  3. Establish Credibility – Make sure there is buy-in and keep it simple.
  4. Ensure Integrity – Use measures to track progress against goals or targets, not to create competition among teams, business units or individuals.
  5. Share Results  – Establish who will receive what results when.

The context in which the keys were originally designed — “productivity is an expectation that employees produce output that gives rise to, and forwards, company goals” could be altered to “productivity is the innate ability of every individual to express, produce or give rise to” — period.  From a Shaman’s point-of-view it could be said that the only reason we do anything is to express and connect with other people.  It could be said that business is really a construct for people to do that – express and connect – and only that. From this context, the Five Keys to Measuring Productivity would be:

  1. Keep it Un-Balanced – Incorporate both leading measures that drive performance and lagging measures that are outcome, or results-oriented.  Focus on the leading measure – have more leading measures than lagging, include measures that express expression.  Allow individuals to design their own leading and lagging measures – incorporate them.
  2. Know the Organization / Individual Connection – Align productivity objectives with the mission and strategy of the organization.  Include the mission, vision, and values of individuals involved in the organization.
  3. Nurture Credibility –  Credibility should be nurtured, never established.  Make sure the company keeps it’s word. Make sure there is buy-in to productivity measures, that people are aligned and inspired, and keep it simple.
  4. Ensure Integrity – Don’t have a whole lot of goals or targets, and never design measures that encourage a breach of an individuals ethics, or pit them against one another.
  5. Share the Good and the Bad Results  – Establish who will receive what results when e.g. everyone whenever they want them.

Measures are important…..they set the edges of the garden in which a business can grow.  Measures should never, however, rule us and they should above all, support every individual to view and expand their expression and connection – ultimately creating a profitable bottom-line that everyone can feel good about.

Ocean Light ~ Rumi

The moon at dawn stooped like a hawk
and took me and flew across the sky

Traveling inside that light, so close,
my body turned to spirit.

I saw nothing but light.
The secret of revelation came clear
with my ship submerged in that.

As it moved, consciousness rose into being,
and the voice of consciousness made every foam fleck a new bodying.

Matter receives a signal
from the sea it floats in.

But without the sun,
without the majesty of Shams,
no one would see the moon
or ever dissolve in ocean light.

Why Rumi?

Courageous Dreaming

spiral

We are what we think.
Everything we are arises from our thoughts.
With our thinking we create the world.

–Buddha

If the world is what we think it is, then we all have the power to dream our world into being.  As Alberto Vill0ldo writes in his book Courageous Dreaming – How Shaman’s Dream the World into Being, “…when…you awaken to your power to dream, you begin to flex the muscles of your courage. Then you can dream bravely: letting go of your limiting beliefs and pushing past your fears. You can begin to create truly original dreams that germinate in your soul and bear fruit in your life.”   OK great..this is very inspiring and spiritual AND as Raain Wilson says, “I am sick of spirituality being airy-fairy, hippy-dippy, and precious.”  I personally like some of the airy-fairy, hippy-dip stuff…but my job is to take spiritual principles and express them in the linear form of business.

In business there are usually some goals and some type of plan.  It may all be in your head, or you may have an elaborate plan with detailed goals on special software on your business computer, but there is an end-point, a vision of the future..a DREAM you are bringing into being.  Ready? Now, assume that your initial plan is NOT your Courageous Dream (CD)…..this is the seed of your CD, but not your CD.  Your CD germinates in your soul when you get into action and get slammed a few times, when you review your motives, when you have exposed every (OK probably not every) excruciating limiting belief and fear that you have. The key is to adjust your plan as you go….flow with the go…it will be ready to bear fruit much quicker that way.  How precious.

Shamanism: Its all about Connection

Update: 6/28/11 : Look for new website coming soon strategystream.com

I met the blogger of Soul Lab, Jennifer Hill Robenault, at the Writer’s Conference in Austin a few weeks ago…I told her about my book, Shaman’s Guide to Business (now Love’s Guide to Business) and her response was “What is up with all the Shamans?” She proceeded to tell me that in two days she was going to go to her first session with a Shaman. When I talked to her later that week she told me it was “life changing.”   Now Jennifer and I are working together….my husband and I are meeting the Shamanic Practitoner, Gerry Starns, next week!  Its all about connection………..

I come from “beginners mind” when it comes to Shamanism and view it as a powerful context from which to talk about connectiveness. Following is an excerpt from the Q & A session with Gerry I particularly resonated with:

SL: You essentially help people reconnect to the spiritual in everyday life. How do people’s lives change as a result of your work?

GS: I believe that if we can infuse our everyday life and experience with spirit, we will naturally become more whole and more connected with that huge context that we call Nature. If we can stop compartmentalizing family from work, from spiritual practice, from parenting, from play, and so on, we will become stronger and feel more fulfilled moment by moment.   To read the entire Soul Lab Interview…….

The Magical Forest ~ Cindy

Cindy and I did a Beautiful Walk Session connecting Spring Texas and The Woodlands Texas.  Post walk, Moor Mapping is used to anchor in the energy shift(s) frequently experienced during a walk.  Moor Mapping is literally “homework” involving creating something in your home / material environment that solidifies your walk insights.  Cindy chose to write a heroic story…

thank you Cindy for sharing it with us!

Look for Cindy’s book, soon to be published “Magical BEings on a Magical Planet.”

I chose a very magical place for my Beautiful Walk.  It was in what I call the Magical Forest, at the spot that I experience Merlin and all of the magical fairies.  As I rounded a bend I had not turned before, I noticed many alcoholic bottles of all colors hung from a small tree that had fallen over the creek bed in which I was walking.  At first, I felt that this magical space had been intruded upon.  Then I noticed how beautiful all the different colors were all swinging in the wind on this fallen tree.  Then I surmised that the fairies had taken all the different colored glass from these bottles and created what really looked like a very large and beautiful wind chime (that, or these fairies were heavy drinkers!) Then Brenda guided me to a space in which I could experience the Sun in all its radiance.  Since I was in the bottom of a tree-lined creek bed, there were spaces that were sunlit and spaces that were in the shade.  It was quite exquisite to both experience as well as describe the experience in detail.

On the next segment Brenda asked me to describe my dream.  I talked nonstop about Magical BEings on a Magical Planet. Almost as if I was calling my dream in, in this Magical Spot.  I was so focused that I forgot to walk, so Brenda walked for me. Then as we began to wrap up, I noticed that two movies that I had recently seen came up for me.  One I called the “nightmare” in which a young woman reporter goes to prison for protecting her Source.  The movie was called “Nothing But the Truth”.  And then, the next movie, “Dreamer”.  I experienced very clearly that I had moved from the “nightmare”, where Truth has not been honored and even to uphold Truth has meant persecution.  TO — Dreaming in the New Dream of Magical Beings on a Magical Planet.  I felt a huge completion and a new beginning all at the same time.  Very amazing journey and one that was very important for me to experience and acknowledge.  Thank you Brenda!

Earth Angel ~ Charlotte

Charlotte and I did a Beautiful Walk Session connecting Kingwood Texas and Durango Colorado.  Post walk, Moor Mapping is used to anchor in the energy shift(s) frequently experienced during a walk.  Moor Mapping is literally “homework” involving creating something in your home / material environment that solidifies your walk insights.  Charlotte chose to write a heroic story…thank you Charlotte for sharing it with us!

Check out Charlotte’s resort Lotus Oasis.

Once upon a time there was an Earth Princess (known by many as an Earth Angel) whose gift to humanity was serving as a vibrational catalyst. The Earth Angel’s interactions with human beings and the gifts that she shared helped increase each being’s vibrations.  In this way, the beings were given the opportunity to shift to a higher frequency.  The Earth Angel could see that the shift happened through her gift, as well as other transformational experiences with other Earth Angels.  Providing a Sanctuary for the beings, that connected many gifted Earth Angel’s, would serve as the fulfillment of the Earth Princess’s job and destiny.

Throughout her current life time, the Earth Angel went through many challenges that helped her re-affirm her purpose.  Some of the challenges came through the earth’s own personality traits that were known as ‘EMOTIONS.’ Somehow, each being on earth was infiltrated with them and they only came into play when the beings were not in their heart’s center.  The Earth Angel was subject to these EMOTIONS as well since she had agreed to interact with human beings without separation.

One day an Earth Prince (known by the Earth Princess as an Earth Angel) came into her life and agreed to help her fulfill her mission.  The Princess and Prince had to work doubly hard to erase separation between them and expel any EMOTIONS that were not in their heart’s center. Often, ‘Doubt’ was what they had to face even though they knew each of their gifts and talents.

The Princess was especially knew the Earth Power’s when dealing with emotion and she often had to tune into the Earth when she struggled with living on it’s surface.  She knew being in nature was a very important remedy for battling unwanted emotions.  And so, the Princess set out on A Beautiful Walk.  As the Princess worked through her doubts and released them to her special ‘peps’ she was able to see more clearly.  In her clear vision she was totally supported by countless other beings that came in all shapes and forms.  The beings were there, just like the Prince, to see the completion of the Princess’s life’s purpose.  They helped her in every way necessary to make sure all her needs were met.  She understood that both she and the Prince were totally supported.

She was reminded that this was not only her dream fulfillment, but that of many.  These helping beings and other Earth Angels became the crusaders for they knew that if their actions were for the good of others it would also serve them. They flocked from all directions to be of service and to fulfill their destiny……and the sanctuary of transformation was placed solidly upon the Earth. The Sanctuary was named Lotus Oasis to symbolize the determination of life despite all adversities (Lotus) and to symbolize the place that brings opportunities for optimal wellness in body, mind and spirit (Oasis).

So through the experiences of her own life lessons the Princess became aware and experienced the necessity of the integration of all aspects of her being – the union of body, mind and spirit.  Because the Princess understood and had experienced the importance of heart centered intention, Lotus Oasis emanated only love and compassion to all who stepped into her little paradise. Lotus Oasis indeed, flourished to became one of the most sought after sanctuaries for transformational experiences…..and the beings, Earth Angels, Prince and Princess were……..satisfied. ~ Charlotte
