So we began and will never cease ~Rumi

I stood before a silk worm one day. And that night my heart said to me,

“I can do things like that, I can spin skies, I can be woven into love that can bring warmth to people; I can be soft against a crying face, I can be wings that lift, and

I can travel on my thousand feet throughout the earth, my sacks filled with the sacred.”

And I replied to my heart, ”Dear, can you really do all those things?”

And it just nodded “Yes”

in silence.

So we began and will never cease.

Expand your view

Originally uploaded by shareedavenport

In all of your business endeavors, always remember your physical set of eyes, as well as your spiritual set of eyes.

With your physical eyes you see the material world and act accordingly, based on what you see. Typically, this is the set of eyes we use when we plan and take actions in our businesses.

But, as we all know, there is more to life than the material world.

With your spiritual eyes, you can see beyond appearances. Instead of allowing appearances to determine what you think is real and reacting to it, you can decide what is beyond the appearance and calmly continue to invoke what you choose. This practice permits the real you to come forth.

Every time you choose to act from a balanced perspective of both material and spiritual, every time you invoke rather than react, every time you choose love over fear –you get closer and closer to the real you and the real world. By doing so, you cause a change in what you see.

As you align more and more with the real you and the real world, this higher reality will permeate and expand all aspects of your business,

and your life.

Walking the Line

On one hand, you want to stay deeply in touch with your inner self – the part of you that has a philosophy about what you want to do and who you want to be. On the other, you want to run a successful business.

An intangible part of you – your spirit – is trying to work with a tangible part – your business sense.

Unfortunately, some advice that’s currently available about those two parts seem to be contradictory.

If you want a healthy spirit, the advice is as intangible as the spirit itself. You might be told to get in touch with your inner desires, or to spend time meditating, or to try new experiences.

There are no guidelines and no rulebooks. There is no way to measure whether you’re doing “well” except by paying attention to how you feel.

If you’re trying to create a thriving business, however, the advice is often nothing but measurements. You have files to complete and to turn into the appropriate addresses, checkboxes to mark off, linear paths to goals. You’ll often see business books that suggest 7 steps or 12 steps – it’s easy to tell whether or not you’ve achieved the goal laid out in each chapter.

Business success is about achieving something tangible – spiritual success is about achieving something intangible.

Running a business where the intangible and the tangible coexist is today’s challenge.  The good news is there are more and more people talking about how to do this.  It takes a community to make it happen and a vision to shift the consciousness of business.

Tell us about how you are doing it or how someone you know is.

We will keep you posted here about people who are walking the line with grace and ease.

Wake up!

Shift Your Business Perspective

What if your business could create happiness, love, and purpose with the same agility and certainty that it creates expanding profits, new customers, and new innovations? It’s a question that isn’t often asked in business, because intangible qualities like love aren’t easily measurable (and measures are the language of business). Most people don’t believe the tangible, everyday needs of business coexist with the intangible.

Oh, but they do.

The truth is just because the current language of business does not acknowledge intangibles, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Your business is an embodiment of who you are and what you believe – every time you expand your business, you also expand the knowledge and empowerment of yourself. When you are fundamentally coming from a place of love and purpose, you automatically are shifting your perspective of business.

When your business blends with your own personal philosophy, decisions become easier. You are able to access support not typically considered in traditional business models. Goals are set and achieved without struggle. Your strategies are driven not just by necessity but by passion. Your focus never wanders. You walk forward with absolute certainty that you are supporting the highest good. Not only does your business become a channel for success – it becomes a channel for your expanded inner self and an expanded model of what it means to be doing business in today’s world.

Poet Post: Joan of Arc by Carol Denson

When I read Ruby’s Eye of the Beholder post, it reminded me of Joan of Arc who acted in accordance with her spiritual vision and led the French to many victories against the occupying English.  If she had only reacted to the material world, she would have known that a 16 year old girl could not influence the course of history.  Instead she acted upon the Divine Guidance of her spiritual vision and created a monumental change in the physical world ~ Carol Denson

Joan of Arc stands in the garden hearing voices call,

but stares away from them, the three angels –

a red-bearded, golden-armored knight,

a flower-wreathed and gauzy-veiled maiden

whose hands are clasped and head canted, gazing

at Joan, and an indistinguishable baby.

Our heroine has risen from a loom,

her stool overturned, her eyes wide

but seeing nothing as she listens into

the space behind her, its unspoken call.

I cry in the Metropolitan Museum

when I come upon this unsuspecting Joan

by Bastien-Lepage.  I’d seen it once

in Paris or Madrid and the circumstance

of finding it again is startling.

Those years ago, heartsick, and now in playful,

happy love, but neither matters, what matters

is the listening and the house behind –

her parents praying for another fate,

their prayers useless against the call.

Love is the Yoke

Consider that when you formulate and act your business dream into being you are accessing the intangible world of spirit and then yoking it into the tangible, material world.  Your dream comes from spirit, your plan is a cart, and love is the yoke (a yoke is a wooden beam placed on oxen to pull a cart or load).

Only you, as a divine human, have the ability to use your heart (or love) as the yoke for everything that you do –imagine the possibilities when transacting every aspect of your business from the space or yoke of love –how delighted spirit would be with you then (assuming that matters to you, of course).  Essentially you create a heaven on earth –a space for spirit to further express and expand itself into tangible existence.

Your vision of your business comes from spirit and expressing that vision is your gift back to spirit. There really is no other choice but to act from the heart in all aspects of your business.  The degree to which we all fight this truth –the degree to which we act in non-compassionate, destructive ways within the realm of business, is the degree to which we, and everyone impacted by business, suffers.

Making a conscious choice to make love to the world with business is a choice we can all live with and yoke to.

The R.O.I. of Coaching, Consulting & Training

If any seemingly “intangible service or program” that you are offering or purchasing promises an increase in productivity, customer service, product quality, sales or the like– measure it. If the service or program cannot promise results linked to business performance, reconsider it.

It is important to expose any fantasy related to the application of services such as coaching, consulting, and training.  Clearing out  delusions and examining motivation, supports accountability for both buyer and seller  — ensuring inspirational and truly powerful results.

All programs should produce a demonstrable increase in business performance that exceeds the cost of the program (Results – Cost)/Results = Return on Investment (R.O.I.).

Before the program begins, obtain a baseline number of the performance measures (e.g. productivity, customer satisfaction, employee retention, product quality, or sales). Only track a measure that is clearly linked to the overall success or profitability of the business.

Convert information such as customer and employee satisfaction scores into a dollar amount. Similarly, cost of the program can be translated into a “score.” The goal is to have two like numbers to use in the R.O.I. formula.

Determine how often the measure will be revisited. Immediately following the program and quarterly or semi-annually checkpoints are typically good.

Share and discuss the results to keep the door open for further inquiry into how the program can impact the performance measure.  Maintain effectiveness as the measure of truth.

Considering only the cost of a program is like a viticulturist paying more attention to the bottle than to the wine. When measurable results are integrated into program implementation, the delivery of substance over form is ensured.

This post is a retread of an article written under my non-pen name, Brenda Rarey ~ co-authored with Diana Petrochelli ~ published in the Houston Business Journal.

Ocean Light ~ Rumi

ocean fingers

The moon at dawn stooped like a hawk
and took me and flew across the sky

Traveling inside that light, so close,
my body turned to spirit.

I saw nothing but light.
The secret of revelation came clear
with my ship submerged in that.

As it moved, consciousness rose into being,
and the voice of consciousness made every foam fleck a new bodying.

Matter receives a signal
from the sea it floats in.

But without the sun,
without the majesty of Shams,
no one would see the moon
or ever dissolve in ocean light.
